The Gateless Barrier 

In this course we’re studying the classic koan collection Wúménguān, which is usually called “The Gateless Gate”. The text is a collection of 48 zen koans compiled in the early 13th century by the Chan master Wumen Huikai.

Each of the koans is supposed to be an entryway, an opportunity to see how our minds work and to make things a little more clear.

The message is that we’re already there. Awakening is our nature, not something far away. These koans will give us insights into our own lives. They will open us up to wisdom. We are using words and concepts to see beyond words and concepts. Sometimes they’re like traps, forcing us to stop using our thinking minds and use our intuition instead.

This course is a study of the first eight koans in this classic collection.
